Anita Mui was born on 10th October 1963, as the youngest child with two older brothers and an older sister, her sister Ann Mui was also a musician and was the person that Anita was closed too. In interviews, Anita has mentioned she never met her father because he passed away before she was born or when she was little (not sure which one it is). From an early age, she had to provide for her family and would perform with her sister at night clubs, bars and pubs. Anywhere, that gave her and her sister a chance to make a living. Thus her education didn't last that long either perhaps because of her busy schedule of having to perform at bars and clubs to support her family, that led to her dropping out of school aged 13 or 14 years old (I read some of the info for Wikipedia, so I'm not claiming it as my own information).
Anita got her big and well deserved break in 1982, after she won a singing competition by singing a song called The Windy Season originally sung by Paula Tsui, she beat over 3,000 people to be crowned the winner. You can find a clip on YouTube of her performing this song with Paula Tsui and also, her performing this song in her concerts/live performances on YouTube.
Anita has had many hit songs that have remained classics in Cantopop , the songs "Mong Bun (Dream Partner)", Bad Girl, Cover Girl, Song Of Sunset, Life Written In Water and Love Warrior amongst many others.
She was known for her extravagant costumes on stage that accompanied her popular hit songs, Anita was also a mentor for a few famous and popular artists that have become big stars today including Andy Hui, Grasshopper and Denise Ho amongst others. Besides music, she also starred in several films as well including Rouge alongside Jackie Chan, Why, Why, Tell, Me, Why 1986 (my favourite because I also like the use of her songs in the film), Trouble Couple, The Heroic Trio, Behind The Yellow Line. She starred in across 40 films in a 20 year period.
Anita also did community work as well, to give back to those who did not have much as she has. Some of her charitable works include lending financial help to Operation Yellowbird, she also established a nursing home in San Francisco in 1992 and in 1993 she established "Anita Mui True Heart Charity Foundation". Besides this, she has done all charitable things but this post will be too long if I was too list every achievement and every thing that Anita ever did.
Sadly, on December 30 2003, she passed away from Cervical Cancer aged 40 years old, she died from lung failure in the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital. Thousands of grieving fans turned up at her funeral in North Point in January 2004, Before her passing, she held a series of concerts titled Anita Classic Moment Live, as her final farewell, despite her failing health. She was still able to perform extremely well and put on an incredible show. My only wish is that I was old enough to be able to watch her concerts, I was eight years old at the time of her death.
For me, she will also live in my heart and I will forever enjoy her music and films. Her personality and the incredible person she was will carry on touching the hearts of her fans, both old and new.
As for my favourite songs its Song Of Sunset, Love Warrior and as of lately, Life Written In Water. But I pretty much love all her songs. Rest In Peace, Anita Mui Yim-Fong.
